Black Onyx is a kind of microcrystalline quartz, known as Chalcedony. The word Chalcedony came from the word Calchedon or Calcedon, which is an old port on the Sea of Marmara in Asia. In ancient times, Onyx stones were famous for being used in bases and handles of gold commodities, and were also used in inlay works by artists. Onyx is a Greek word which means ‘fingernail’ or ‘claw.’ It is considered as a protective stone, and it provides courage and strength to fight off any evil and negative drive.
As the stones were a symbol of protection and considered to ward off negativity, it was believed that placing this gemstone on a woman’s belly would reduce the labor pain and stimulate the delivery.
